4 Essential Summer Car Tips

Summer is the time to enjoy your surroundings and get out of your home. Driving is the best way to get to all your favorite summer destinations, but simply getting in your car and driving far doesn’t come without risk. After the long, cold winter, your car might not be ready for the opposite extremes of the summer. Here are some easy tips to ensure your car runs safe and smoothly!

Check Your Battery

Heat and vibration are a battery’s worst enemy! Make sure your battery is prepared for high temperatures, as the summer heat can have more negative impact on your battery than freezing winter temperatures. Keeping your battery clean by wiping off the terminals is one of the best ways to ensure it runs smoothly. Also make sure it is strapped down securely, and if it isn’t holding a charge well, take it to a mechanic so they can run a quick inspection.

Check Your Engine Filters

Make sure your engine air and cabin filter are clean by keeping dirt out of it. Summer is an excellent time to clean and work on your car, and cleaning or replacing your air filters is a crucial part. Modern cars often have extra filters so make sure to check those too. It’s recommended to change your air filters every 12,000 miles, and replacing dirty air filters can improve your gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. (via Pep Boys)

Check Your Fluid Levels

With hot temperatures, it’s crucial that you check the level of the coolant and the mixture of water and coolant. A general rule is to replace your coolant every two years, and you can get premixed coolant at any auto or hardware store. Make sure to also check the state of the hoses and coolant reservoir for leaks. If the hoses are not firm but soft, you might want to see a mechanic to determine your best options moving forward.

Make Sure Your AC Is Working Properly

Stay cool, using AC efficiently improves fuel economy and keeps your car in top shape. If your air conditioning isn’t working properly or is leaking, make sure you go to a mechanic immediately to avoid paying for further damages. Air-conditioning is not only your own but your cars best friend during the summer.
